Coral nutrition

Coral nutrition

In the field, corals obtain sugars (their ‘fast food’) from their symbiotic algae. But most other nutrients are obtained when they feed on live plankton. However, in land-based coral aquaculture settings, these sources of nutrition are not normally available

In 2024, we will add to our investigation in nutrition in coral aquaculture. We will study the growth and nutritional status of coral recruits fed live plankton and/or a liquid foods including a blend of marine lipids, amino acids, pigments and minerals under two water flow regimes. The results will support the development of standard feeding protocols for use in coral aquaculture.
