CReefs
Launched in 2005, CReefs was the coral reef component of the Census of Marine Life, a global network of researchers in more than 80 countries engaged in a 10-year initiative to assess and explain the diversity, distribution and abundance of marine life in the oceans─past, present and future.
BHP Billiton supported the field-based activities of the Australian node and the follow-up analyses of collections from these expeditions (with $3.4 million over four years) in a deal brokered by the Great Barrier Reef Foundation and AIMS. Learn more about the project here.
Thai–Australian coral reef and mangrove collaboration
AIMS worked together with the IBM International Foundation, Kansai Environmental Engineering Centre (KEEC), Kansai Electric Power Company (KEPCO) and UOG to improve the management of coral reef and mangrove habitats through intensive research, international collaboration and the use of powerful visualisation tools.
The joint research project studied the production and transport of organic carbon in mangrove and coastal areas in Australia’s Hinchinbrook Channel and in Sawi Bay, Thailand.
Big Bank Shoals of the Timor Sea
BHP Petroleum (BHPP) worked with AIMS in the 1990s studying the ecosystems of the Big Bank Shoals in the centre of the Timor Sea and producing an environmental resource atlas of the region. Learn more about the project here.
