Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority

AIMS works together with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) to ensure that the quality of water entering the Great Barrier Reef from land use has no detrimental impact on the health and resilience of the Reef.

This is the goal of GBRMPA’s Reef Water Quality Protection Plan (Reef Plan), which includes the Reef Rescue Marine Monitoring Program (MMP), a monitoring component.

With AIMS as a key partner, MMP monitors:

  • Sediment, nutrients and other pollutants entering Reef waters
  • Nearshore water quality
  • Inshore reef condition
  • The condition of key biological communities influenced by water quality.

The monitoring program builds upon long-term research and monitoring projects, largely conducted by AIMS. It provides essential baseline information about the status of water quality in the Great Barrier Reef and river waters and the condition of marine ecosystems.
