Corporate Governance

The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is a Commonwealth statutory authority operating under the Australian Institute of Marine Science Act 1972 (Cth).

AIMS is accountable to the Minister for Industry and Science and is governed by a Council that reports to the Minister. The Council, which meets quarterly, sets AIMS’ strategic directions and research strategies and oversees management of the Institute, operating in accordance with a Council Charter. The CEO is responsible for the day-to-day affairs of the Institute.

AIMS organises its capabilities to maximise effective delivery of its vision. That research effort is supported by services sections including corporate, operations and infrastructure, business and commercial and communication.

The Minister outlined expectations for how AIMS will exercise its functions to take into account the Government’s policy framework and priorities in a Statement of Expectations on 13 February 2020.
