The metadata are stored in a searchable metadata catalogue, GeoNetwork, in the ISO 19115-3 standard. The GeoNetwork metadata catalogue offers machine harvesting features in several ways including:
- Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH)
- Catalogue Service for Web (CSW) protocol
- Open GIS Consortium (OGC) protocols
- Z3950 protocol, popular with library catalogues
