About this Opportunity

By shaping and implementing our external communication strategies, you will play a significant role in determining how Australia values the role of marine science in helping to manage, protect and restore its tropical marine environments, including the world-heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef.

As a member of the Institute’s senior leadership team, you will contribute to the positioning of AIMS as a trusted and impartial advisor for governments, resource managers, industry partners and the general public.

Your background in corporate communication, public affairs and/or the media will help AIMS researchers – some of the world’s most highly regarded marine scientists – to share their important work with the community.

Your skills as an eloquent communicator – particularly in the area of high-impact written material – will significantly improve AIMS’ profile in public discussion of matters relating to marine science.

Supported by a small team of committed and experienced staff, you will have the opportunity to deliver modern communication programs that enhance and protect AIMS’ reputation for leadership at the frontier of tropical marine science.

Attractive working conditions are on offer, including a 9-day fortnight, generous leave entitlements, transportation to site, a salary range of $115,067 - $147,312 and 15.4% superannuation.

Based in Townsville, this role provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy a real tropical change in one of Australia’s most liveable cities, where you’ll see more than 300 days of sunshine each year. Relocation assistance will be included.

About You

You will have a successful track record of developing and leading the implementation of communication strategies, plans and initiatives and will have a well-established network of contacts in the media. Underpinned by relevant tertiary qualifications, you will also be able to demonstrate:

  • Superior verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to influence and build strong and productive relationships;
  • Ability to lead a multidisciplinary communications team;
  • Ability to use digital marketing techniques; and
  • Ability to deliver targeted and creative communication products for varying stakeholders.
